Fans of Korean Cinema are likely to be familiar with recent Korean-War-themed works like
    Welcome to Dongmakgol
    ,
    Joint Security Area
    , and
    Taegukgi
. These are all films made decades after the event, reflecting how much popular opinion changed over the years, influenced by changing regimes and more flexible policies toward North Korea. Korean War films, however, have a long history spanning back 50 years. Made in the 50s,
    Piagol
was not a huge commercial success, but it quickly became one of the most striking portrayals of the Korean War. It was also the debut film of Kim Jin Kyu, who would go on to become one of the industry's leading stars during the late 50s and 60s.
Unlike other war films of the period which usually focused on Southern solders,
    Piagol
tells the story of a group of partisans and the inner conflict that builds within the group because of their ideology, a female compatriot, and the government's crackdown on communist guerrillas. The film's portrayal of partisans was so realistic that members of the production were accused of being pro-Communist by the Korean army.
Just like all the other Korean Film Archive releases, both the booklet and the following special features are English subtitled:
Film Critic Kim Jong Won introduces
    Piagol
    (5:00)
Documentary about Director Lee Gang Cheon (45:00)
    Still Gallery
    Cast and Director Filmography
    Essays about the Film
